Free Software, is it any use? You're looking for a new PC and are offered an office and anti-virus/Internet security package for a reduced cost, but only if you buy it with your new PC. But could your money be better spent on a higher performance PC and use some free alternatives. What alternatives to use? Open Office is a great alternative to Microsoft Office. Open Office gives you compatibility to read and write to Microsoft Office files (Word, Excel, & Powerpoint). Open Office gives you good word processor, spread sheet, presentation, drawing, and database applications, not to mention they ability to create and edit html documents. The only thing that Open office lacks is an outlook application (which is only available in certain versions of Microsoft Office), but if you can live without the e-mail, calendar, and contacts, all in one application that Outlook offers, and you like the idea of FREE open office is for you. Avast Anti Virus is a good Free (home users only) anti-virus, their paid for version is very reasonable in cost as well with the ability to purchase multiple licences at the same time to bring down the cost of ownership for small business, It is a great low cost/free alternative to some of the big boxed brands and a big plus is built in support for 64 bit (X64) operating systems. Big note... I'm not paid by any of the companies mentioned here, and you use their software at your own risk |
